We hear more and more about Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). We all want to protect our sight and we would therefore like to protect ourselves as soon as possible. Would our screens play a role in this increasingly common phenomenon? Would the blue light emitted by their LEDs have an impact on this disease?

Blue light: absolute toxicity?

man in front of several screens emitting blue light

We opened the Shield archives and found his file:

Code name: Blue Light / blue light

Energy Level: High

Wavelength: Between 380 and 500 nanometers

Nature: Waves or particles - or both, it depends on the researchers

Location: in addition to sunlight, it is found in artificial light sources such as mobile phones, computers, tablets, television screens and modern lighting (via LEDs, or light-emitting diodes) 📳

People concerned: 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 The whole population - likes to attack the over 50s

Special abilities: in permanent or over-frequent contact with the eyes, blue light:

  • 💥 Penetrates deeper into the retina

  • 😴 Disrupts the sleep-wake cycle

Blue light is part of our daily life and remains necessary to regulate our body , but at specific times and at normal doses . The problem is that we are overexposed to it.

AMD: Késako?

So imagine you just woke up, you want to turn off the damn alarm clock, but you can't see it because there's a big black spot right in the middle of your vision ⚫. And this task does not leave you any more, long minutes with the appearance of the disease, being able to go until permanent blindness!

This is - in summary - what Age-Related Macular Degeneration is. There are other effects , like:

  • 🌈 changing color vision

  • 🥓 distortion of objects and straight lines, which appear wavy or curved

  • 🔍 difficulty in perceiving details in the center of the visual field (loss of visual acuity)

  • ➖ a decrease in sensitivity to contrasts

  • 🦇 night vision discomfort

  • 📖 difficulties in reading with need for more light

  • ☀ a sensation of dazzling

👉 What strongly interfere with daily tasks.

It's a problem that affects the retina , the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye. AMD is caused by the breakdown of cells in our retina.

There are two kinds of degeneration:

  • 🌵 Dry AMD : this is the most common form, generally considered less severe because it is slower, but there is no treatment.

  • 💧 Wet AMD : It is rarer but more serious, as it can lead to rapid and permanent vision loss (even if there are treatments to slow it down).

The link between blue light and AMD

Some researchers have suggested that prolonged exposure to blue light, especially at high levels and without adequate protection, may adversely affect the retina and increase the risk of developing long-term AMD (report from the ANSES or the study of the American Macular Degeneration Foundation).

👉 Blue light is thought to cause oxidative stress in retinal cells, which may contribute to their deterioration.

However, it should be noted that studies on the direct link between blue light and AMD are still ongoing. Other factors, such as age (15% of the population over 80 have severe AMD - see health insurance site), family history, smoking and exposure to other factors of risk.

Other impact of blue light: Scientific studies have shown that exposure to blue light can disrupt the production of melatonin , a hormone that helps regulate the sleep-wake rhythm . Disruption of this production can affect sleep quality , lead to eye strain and other health concerns 🩺 .

The 4 essential prevention tips

What can we do to protect our eyes from the effects of blue light - in the long term - and reduce the possibility of developing AMD?

  • 🚭 Do not smoke : The risk is multiplied by a factor of 2 to 4 in heavy smokers

  • 🥗 Eat better : a body mass index above 30 would double the risk of developing AMD. A healthy diet is essential to preserve your body and your eyesight. (🥦 green vegetables, 🍓 red fruits, 🥜 nuts).

  • 🌞 Protect your eyes from the sun and ultraviolet rays : A study from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine suggests that low antioxidant levels + sun exposure promote the appearance of certain forms of macular degeneration linked to age.

  • 🩺 See an eye doctor regularly: Regular eye exams can help identify eye health issues early and initiate preventative treatment. For the good of your photoreceptor cells and your eyes in general!

Prevention advice related to screens and LEDs

👓 Use blue light filters

Blue light filters are glasses specially designed to filter out harmful light. It's a simple solution. And this is our solution : Our glasses filter 100% of blue light at 400nm and more than 50% or 86% between 380 and 450nm (depending on the model)!

In addition to this (and according to theopinions of our customers ) our glasses :

  • 👀 reduce eye strain

  • 🤒 prevent headaches

  • 👍 improve visual comfort

  • 🌈 improve the rendering of your screen.

The magic moment: guaranteed for life, they are also quite affordable!

🚨 Do you work outside like a madman on your smartphone? Standard sunglasses are helpful, but not all of them filter out harmful light ! Consider anti-UV and anti-blue light sunglasses .

Reduce exposure to light at night

In other words, if you haven't finished your -prison from which no one escapes- in Minecraft before nightfall, it's lost.

👉 No secret, avoid using electronic devices before going to bed (we know, it's hard: the habit of the smartphone at the end of the evening to check the networks), rather use a mask to protect your retinas!

👉 Wear anti-blue light glasses at nightfall, so as not to limit your melatonin production.

👉 Use warm, dim lights to create a soothing atmosphere before sleeping.

Night worker friend, under the neon lights, it is quite possible to wear filter glasses while working !

Take regular breaks

We must make sure to rest our eyes regularly. Take a 10-minute break every hour, for example. It's a bit of a road safety message, but it's terribly effective 😅.

Also remember to look up from smartphones every 20 minutes. Even for people playing LoL.

👉 During the break, several things to do, for example: we fix a point in the distance (on the back wall?), then a close point (the top of the mobile phone?), several times in a row. This relaxes the eye muscles and reduces eye fatigue.

Where then, why not walk a little?

The final word

Blue light is not a crazy concept invented by Jigsaw, we don't have 10 minutes to thwart the final trap. Researchers are still debating, but early studies seem to show that it actually increases the risk of AMD and affects the health of our eyes .

The worst part of all this is that you can combine all the risk factors without feeling anything before the age of fifty!

So take care of yourself, put our recommendations into practice to preserve your sight in the long term.
